That’s close enough that “prepare” actually means something now — not hype-cycle nonsense, just a handful of real things worth sorting out before launch day instead of scrambling on it.
Is the release date actually real this time?
Fair question given the history. GTA 6 has already slipped once. But this time it’s different in one important way: pre-orders are live, retail pricing is set, and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has publicly stated he doesn’t expect further delays. That’s not a guarantee — nothing is until the disc is in your hands — but it’s a meaningfully stronger signal than a trailer with no date attached. Our take: plan around November 19, but don’t book the day off work until we’re inside the final month.
Do you actually have the right console?
This is the one people get caught out on. GTA 6 is a clean current-gen exclusive — confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There’s no PS4 or Xbox One version, and no Switch 2 version either. If you’re still on last-gen hardware, this is the moment to actually budget for the upgrade rather than assuming a version will exist for your console — it won’t.
PC players: there’s no confirmed release date yet. Rockstar’s pattern with GTA 5 was roughly an 18-month gap before it reached PC, so a 2027–2028 window is a reasonable expectation — but treat that as an educated guess, not a promise, since Rockstar hasn’t said anything official.
Clear out storage space now, not on launch day
Rockstar hasn’t published the exact install size yet, but every signal points to this being their biggest open world to date — expect a large day-one install plus title updates on top of it. Check your console’s free storage this week, not while a progress bar is crawling on release night. If you’re anywhere close to full, start deciding now what old installs you’re willing to delete.
Standard vs. Ultimate Edition — what you’re actually paying for
Standard Edition is $79.99 and gets you the entire core game — Jason and Lucia’s full story across Leonida and Vice City, the complete map, every core mechanic, and GTA Online access. Nothing is held back from the main experience.
Ultimate Edition is $99.99 — a $20 premium that adds extra vehicles, weapons, exclusive shops and their inventories, a car restoration activity, a second garage, cosmetic sets for both protagonists, and a handful of extra missions tied to that content. None of it appears to touch the main story. If you’re only here for the campaign, Standard covers you completely — and Rockstar has confirmed Standard owners can buy the Ultimate upgrade later, so it’s not a decision you’re locked into at pre-order.
One thing that trips people up: the “Vintage Vice City Pack” (a classic car, outfits, hairstyles, and a weapon pattern) is not Ultimate-exclusive — it’s a pre-order bonus for either edition, as long as you buy before November 20, 2026. Don’t pay extra for Ultimate assuming it’s the only way to get that pack.
Worth catching up on the story so far?
GTA 6 isn’t a direct sequel to GTA 5’s story, so you don’t need a refresher on Michael, Franklin, and Trevor to follow along. What’s actually worth knowing going in is who Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are — Rockstar has built this game’s entire narrative around their relationship, described as a romantic criminal partnership, and it’s the first mainline entry to give a female protagonist that central a role. The three official trailers released so far are a genuinely good use of twenty minutes if you want context before launch, rather than going in cold.
