iPhone Screen Time Inaccurate? Here's Why (and the Real Fix)

Last updated: August 1, 2026

If your iPhone’s Screen Time numbers never seem to match how much you actually used your phone, you’re not imagining it. Some of this comes down to real bugs and settings, but some of it comes down to Screen Time measuring something slightly different than what most people assume. Here’s both sides of it, and how to fix what’s actually fixable.

How Accurate Is Screen Time Supposed to Be?

Before troubleshooting, it helps to know what Screen Time is actually built to measure. It tracks foreground activity: apps that are open and visible on your screen while you’re interacting with them. It does not track most background activity.

There’s one real exception worth knowing: apps that are actively playing audio, tracking your location, or listening for an incoming call while running in the background can add a small amount of time to your totals, even though you weren’t holding your phone. This is normal and by design, not a bug, but it’s exactly the kind of thing that makes your numbers feel “off” if you don’t know it’s happening.

Make Sure Screen Time Is Actually Tracking Everything

This is the most common cause of genuinely inaccurate numbers, not just confusing ones. If a setting called App & Website Activity is turned off, Screen Time stops recording usage entirely for whatever it doesn’t track, which makes your totals look artificially low.

Go to Settings → Screen Time and make sure App & Website Activity is turned on.

Notifications Can Quietly Inflate Your Numbers

Here’s something that confuses a lot of people: opening a notification on your Lock Screen turns your screen on, and Screen Time counts that as usage, even if you never actually opened the app. So your real “usage” can look higher than it felt.

Combined with the background-audio exception mentioned above, this is usually why Screen Time can feel inaccurate even when it’s technically working exactly as designed.

Using Multiple Apple Devices Can Cause Sync Issues

If you use an iPhone, iPad, and Mac with the same Apple ID, Screen Time is supposed to combine usage across all of them into one accurate total. In practice, this sync doesn’t always work perfectly, and totals can end up incomplete or delayed on one device while showing correctly on another.

Check That Your Date and Time Are Set Correctly

Screen Time relies on your iPhone’s system clock to log when usage happens. If your date or time is ever off, even briefly, it can throw off how accurately that day’s data gets recorded and grouped.

Go to Settings → General → Date & Time and make sure Set Automatically is turned on.

Low Power Mode Can Interfere With Tracking

Low Power Mode pauses some background activity to save battery, and that can affect how accurately Screen Time logs what’s happening in the background. If your numbers look off specifically on days you used Low Power Mode a lot, this is likely why.

If Nothing Else Works: Reset Screen Time for Accurate Tracking

If something’s already gone wrong with your tracking, this resets it cleanly. Go to Settings → Screen Time, turn it off, wait a moment, then turn it back on. This won’t delete your device or affect anything else on your iPhone, it just gives Screen Time a fresh, accurate start going forward.

The short version

  • Screen Time only tracks foreground use by design, plus a small exception for background audio, location, and call-listening — that alone can make totals feel off
  • Make sure App & Website Activity is turned on in Settings → Screen Time
  • Notifications turning your screen on can quietly inflate your numbers
  • Multiple Apple devices on the same Apple ID don’t always sync Screen Time accurately
  • Make sure Date & Time is set to Automatic — a wrong clock throws off tracking
  • Low Power Mode can interfere with how accurately background activity gets logged
  • Turning Screen Time off and back on resets tracking cleanly if something’s already wrong
